Your privacy here

The short version

• You can browse anonymously. There is no account, no login, and no sign-up anywhere on this site.
• We measure how the site is used so we can make it clearer and more useful. We do that with tools that count visits and show us where pages confuse people, not with anything that builds a profile of you or follows you around the web.
• We never sell your data, never show ads, and never place retargeting pixels.
• Anything you send us on purpose, like a story or a correction, is handled under a separate set of rules explained on the Contribute page.

What we measure, and why

We look at how the site is used for one reason: to improve the content, the usability, and the quality of the help we offer. A woman searching at two in the morning should land on a page that answers her, loads fast, and does not lose her. To do that we use a small set of services. Here is each one and what it sees.

• First-party analytics. We host our own privacy-focused analytics. It counts things like which pages are read, roughly where visitors arrive from (country and referring link), and what kind of device they use. It does not set cookies, does not build a profile of you, and does not follow you to other websites.
• Cloudflare. The site is delivered through Cloudflare, which routes traffic and blocks attacks. To do that, Cloudflare processes technical request data, including IP addresses, and gives us aggregate, network-level traffic numbers (Cloudflare privacy policy).
• Microsoft Clarity. This is a usability tool from Microsoft. It produces anonymized heatmaps and session recordings that show us where people get stuck, so we can fix confusing layouts. It masks the text you type and the contents of form fields by default, and it does not tell us who you are (Microsoft privacy statement). See the hard line below for where we do not allow it to run.
• Google Maps. Facility pages embed a map so you can see where a facility is. Opening a page that has a map loads it from Google, which applies its own privacy policy to that request (Google privacy policy).
• YouTube. A few pages embed video. We use YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode, which holds off on cookies until you press play. Playing a video connects you to YouTube, which is run by Google under the same policy linked above.
• Web fonts. None, in the sense that matters here. As of August 2026 the typeface is served from this site itself rather than from Google's font service, so reading a page no longer sends your IP address to a third party just to render the text.

Cookies

This site uses very few cookies. Our own analytics set none. Microsoft Clarity and Cloudflare may set a small number for usability measurement and security. You can block or delete cookies in your browser at any time, and every page here will still work.

What we never do

• We never sell, rent, or trade your data.
• We never show ads.
• We never place retargeting or advertising pixels.
• We never try to identify you personally from your browsing.

Your choices

• Read in a private or incognito window, or use a tracker blocker. The site respects that and still works.
• Most browsers let you send a "Do Not Track" or global privacy signal. Where a service honors it, it will apply.
• Email us at contribute@womensfederalprison.com with any privacy question, or to ask us to delete something you sent. We do our best to remove what we can, though we cannot reach copies already saved by third parties or search engines.

If you share your story

When you email us a story or a correction, a separate set of rules applies, because you are choosing to send us something. We explain exactly how we store it, who reads it, how to ask for deletion, what quotation consent means, and the real limits of anonymity on the Contribute page. Please read that before you write to us.

Changes to this page

We may update this page as the site grows. The "Last reviewed" date at the top shows when we last checked it. If we make a change that affects your privacy in a real way, we will make that clear rather than bury it.
